About Matt

A career that began in a hospital cardiac department and grew into global commercial leadership

Matt has followed health innovation along its whole path, from the clinic where he started to the devices, trials and commercial strategy that bring new products to patients.

Matt Hallam started his working life as a cardiac technician at Glenfield Hospital in the NHS. He then completed a BSc (Hons) in Biology and Environmental Science at University College Worcester and moved into the medical device industry. He provided clinical and technical support with Intermedics and Dot Medical, and was a product specialist in cardiac electrophysiology and implantable defibrillators at Medtronic. That grounding in the clinic has shaped how he approaches every commercial role since.

He went on to develop therapies across Europe for Endocardial Solutions, then moved to Australia, where he worked with St. Jude Medical and began a long career at Johnson & Johnson's Biosense Webster. There he rose from product specialist to field sales manager. He then moved to the United States to lead worldwide commercial excellence, building global launch training and competency frameworks and supporting the company's launch strategy for Japan. His work earned him the Johnson & Johnson Credo Award and Standard of Leadership Award.

Returning to Australia, Matt led sales teams across the southern region for Abbott Vascular and ran the cardiac rhythm management business for Sorin Group across Australia and New Zealand, which was recognised as the group's fastest-growing business unit worldwide. As Managing Director, Oceania for Merit Medical, he turned a distributor-led presence into a fully operational direct business. He built every function from finance and regulatory affairs to logistics and sales, and led the acquisition and integration of Intellimedical and ITL Healthcare.

From there Matt moved into the systems that bring new health products into being. He held full regional responsibility for Citeline across Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia, and ran national digital health and AI programs for the Digital Health CRC with partners including Stanford, UNSW, the University of Queensland, Microsoft and NSW Health. As Chief Operating Officer of CROW Clinical, he helped turn a clinical support provider into a full contract research organisation. He has since advised Evrima Technologies on partnership strategy across Australia and the United States, served as Interim CEO of OOXii Global, and led revenue at the ASX-listed TrialKey.

Today Matt brings all of this experience to researchers, clinicians and founders who want to turn a strong idea into a sustainable venture.

Common questions

What people ask Matt before they get in touch

Most conversations start with a concern, a decision or an idea that needs a clear next step. That is enough to reach out.

Can Matt help if the idea is still at an early stage?

Yes. Early-stage founders are a large part of Matt's mentoring work through AUSCEP, Melbourne Actuator, MUBES, BrainSTEM and Luminate. An outside view at that stage can help a team avoid assumptions that become costly to unwind later.

Does Matt work with university research teams?

Yes. His role at Swinburne is focused on turning research into licences, spin-outs and industry partnerships, and he understands how university, government and industry priorities fit together.

Can Matt support clinical trial planning?

Yes. Through Melbourne Scientific he has supported device trials, trial design and in-theatre work, and he has held senior roles with a contract research organisation, a trial recruitment company and a trial intelligence company.

Does Matt work with organisations outside Australia?

Matt has worked across the United Kingdom, Europe, the United States and the Asia Pacific. He supports both inbound and outbound life sciences investment and commercialisation.

How do I invite Matt to speak or join a board?

Use the contact form and choose speaking or board enquiry. Include the organisation, the audience or role, and any timing.
